The Neighborhood Youth Leadership Academy (NYLA) is sponsored by the Phoenix Project (Good Samaritan Hospital), now in its eleventh year, the program is directed by Cheryl DeVaughn. The group meets at Fairview United Methodist Church for academic learning in creative writing, history and math with basic money matters skills. In addition to the academic learning classes, the students takes an hands on approach in cooking, sewing and self-enrichment classes. NYLA is held five days per week, Mondays through Fridays for six weeks, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Those who successfully complete the summer program receive a stipend.
Funding has been provided by the Phoenix Project, Good Samaritan Hospital, Citywide Development Corporation and the City of Dayton. Other participants include the Dayton Metro Library, Fairview Neighborhood Association and the Fairview United Methodist Church and countless of volunteers.
